I have to say looking at car history there are 2 really important "eras".

-Muscle Car Era (mid60's-Late70's)-- Each company was putting bigger and better engines than the last company to outdo them to boost sales and win curcuits. Each company was still building an image at this time, making unqiue bodies and engines. Sad day when the gas shortage arrived and these beauties were auctioned off for almost nothing.

-Japanese Twin Turbos (early90's-99)--These cars provided porsche handling and ferrari like speed and style for 1/3 the price of an actual one. They gained their biggest rep in the 80's along with the European cars. Unlike the muscle cars, these cars used smaller engines but were also high power output. This era did not have a crisis, there was simply not as much of a demand for them and they slowly faded out until the next era.

ok um

50's development of the high performance V8's .. the end of the flat heads/nail heads????? The hot rod craze .. the styling cues????? 50's mercs and 55-57 Chevy's

the 50's were an era of style and grace

80's mass production of fuel injected sports cars .. The radical styling changes in Corvette .. Camaro .. Nissan ..
The stream lined era ..

cmon now dude .. theres more than just big blocks and VR4's running around .. jeez go back and read up on your HISTORY

I actually kind of agree.

Now, the new era is coming. The turbo compact car craze. I don't know if the before stated are "the most important"... Its just a different "addition to teh automotive world". The 80's brought fuel injection to pretty much everyone. The 70's brought the imports to the masses. The 60's brought the muscle cars. Before that, it was brining art to cars. The 90's brought boost into the equation. The 00's are bringing power to the masses. Cheap power for everyone. SRT-4, Evo, STi, and many others are to follow.

No shit ... sedans now run 14's and SUV's have over 300HP ... but they still aren't as fast as they were during the turbo 'era' ... I mean what the fuck a stock RX8 is almost a second slower than a stock RX7 ... the 350Z is half a second slower than a 300Z ... why are they slower?

I'm sorry I should've made my thread title clearer. I meant to say most important eras that are being used as references for the newer cars. Or playing an important role in today's cars. As you can see the art cars r gone now as we use more blah designs.

cheap is right, but when you look at the problems that this "cheap power" brings you,, i would rather take 50 year old over engineered technology than modern day under engineeried technology. and 1957 brought fuel injection to everyone

True 1957 did bring Fuel injection .. but every sports car by the 80's (off the assembly line mind you) was FI

Designs now are getting boxier by the model year .. boxier than my corvette .. which is hard to fathom .. it seems like models are beginning to square off curvacious lines and head more towards the curves under the hood .. simple lines and interiors are more appealing to the consumer mass .. even the retro cars are taking classic styling ques and revamping the whole ideal behind a beautiful car .. and futurizing it like a jetson's episode .. STOP KILLING A GOOD THING
XTT - the cars of today are definitely adapting the turbo aspect of 90's performance cars and the outright insane performance numbers and size of the 70's
