I've been kickin' around the idea of a dirtbike for a while. Now that I got a truck to haul one around with, I'm thinking about it more.
What should I look for when looking for a starter bike? I really don't know much of anything about them.
For a starter, are bikes from the '80s ok? I see lots of them on eBay, and my dad used to ride them back in the '70s/'80s so I'd imagine he could assist me in tune ups, etc.
I don't really want to spend alot, I want to learn how to ride and not worry about wreckin it.
Thanks in advance.

CR125 (any 125 really, i just like hondas) from the 90's. anything older might need some work. Any 2 stroke thats old might need a top end rebuild if it hasn't been done recently, but its not hard. For a first bike i would stay away from a 250, focus on learning how to ride, not hold on when you hit the powerband when you didn't mean to.

I too would stay away from anything older than mid/late 90's. You can pick up late 90's CR's and RM's for short money. I know of a 99 RM125 for like $1200. If your really broke I suggest you just save up for one. Buying an older one will bring nothing but headaches when it comes to repairs and replacements.
