From Sport Compact Car Magazine, Aug 2003:
Honda-powered Chevy Malibu Maxx SS
The 2004 Malibu Maxx SS has a Honda V6 under its hood. Based on the upcoming five-door Malibu Maxx (think 13.10-scale Mazda Protege) which is built atop GM's Epsilon platform, the SS version gets 18-inch wheels, the appropriate trim, bright blue paint and Honda's 3.5 liter VTEC V6 under the hood. That's right, the same engine that's under the hood of the Odyssey, Pilot and Acura MDX is between the front wheels of this Chevy (and a couple of other upcoming GM products, including the Saturn VUE SUV).
Chevy showed the Maxx SS at the New York Auto Show in concept form while asserting that no decision had been made about its production. Rumors are, however, that this thing is so green-lighted, it's practically radioactive.

See, this is what I don't understand. They just designed and are starting to build their BRAND new 3.5L V6 for the CTS... I don't understand why they aren't using this engine, unless it is a joint venture with Honda, which wouldnt surprise me. I know that honda was getting some engines from GM (diesels I think), so maybe it was a trade.

They did when it first came out....
yes, the SS is actually a semi decent car, but really, they are using an engine from 1997 with pretty much NO improvements. I guess if it ain't broke, don't fix it. GTP seems to do fine with that engine. Supposedly, with a *GOOD* driver and a decent set of tires, a stock GTP can run 13.9. But, this is that "once in a lifetime" situations.

you guys are retarded. so putting a pretty decently revving, honda-built v6 into your cars kills them, eh?
brainwashed, brand-loyal, closed-minded schmucks...
the only thing in this thread i can even relate to is jay's comment about how gm just developed a nice 6-cyl, why not use it?
the only thing i can think of is to say that this particular 6 from honda is already established to be decently performing in a few cars, and is rated at 260+ horse or so. i fail to see the problem, other than you "only american cars are good" folks bitching cuz you now have a japanese part in your car... big fucking deal...

My major gripe was that they have almost the exact same engine that they just designed. Also, I am going to take this article with a grain of salt. Because, they state the engine is a 3.5 DOHC engine, which is the exact same engine that GM just came out with. The HP ratings are even about the same. And yes, it has variable valve timing as well. So, maybe it is just a confused journalist. Either way, because this isnt the first time GM has worked with an import company. They have a joint venture with toyota (vibe / matrix) where they are designing shit together. So, either way, I don't care if they mix and match parts. I just found it a rather off article.
