Flows, I'd say 2 1/2" 'cause you're not going crazy with the engine, and I'd go see Wally at right Choice, he's local, less of a ride, and I'm willing to bet he'd be cheaper :cool2:

Right now I got a stock catback with a Flowmaster 80 series. Opening the cutout before the cat, I gain 21rwhp and 8rwtq in second gear on the dyno :worship2: Now I dunno whats more restrictive...the Flowmaster muffler or my stock I pipe, but either way its not that great.

So I'm switching over to a Hooker 3" catback. I've heard alot of soundclips and videos and it sounds awesome. Plus its only $262 for my car, compared to some poppy rattly Flowmaster system for $329.

But your application is alot different, you would be running straight through mufflers...instead of my car where its got the gay ass crossflow design. Just some food for thought tho:smokin:

Listen to matt

Youre not doing any modifications to the head correct? If you dont plan on seriously modifying the engine in any way .. by means of bore/stroke or forced induction .. than a 2 1/2 in exhaust is best .. if you go any bigger you might run into clearance problems over the axle etc .. dont know about those cars but im just throwin it out there .. i have 2 in exhaust on the corvette and its perfect .. no need for any large dimensions because then you might run into backflow issues .. stay 2 1/2 .. and get mandrel bent piping from the headers back .. just basically pipe thats not creased .. find some decent headers .. muffler is all about sound preference .. listen to some cars that have flowmaster .. borla .. hooker .. slp .. etc to get a feel for what you like .. some sound clips on the computer can be decieving .. and do it up

What you're looking at is a combination of cat and muffler .. the cat on our cars kills the flow on the exhaust .. you opened the cutout before the cat so im assuming just after the Y pipe merges into 1 correct? Basically you tapped the optimum flow point of the exhaust thats why you're seeing such a high number .. that and you modified certain flow characteristics on the motor itself .. Headers are a different story and you'd see a chunk of that 21rwhp increase .. flowmaster mufflers are not incredibly restrictive .. remember two outlets per 1 3in inlet .. and still flows incredibly better than stock mufflers .. all it has in it are baffles .. ive built a lot of exhaust systems for all my cars .. id say you're better off increasing the diameter of the pipe from the Y pipe .. maybe 3 1/2 in custom pipe and going with a custom muffler that can accomodate that size .. like spintech for example ..

better flow makes for better sound .. you should hear mine after i back off from like 4500rpm .. a perfect lil crackle and just sounds mean as hell with the new tips on it (thanks B)

Ken you got a really good point about the cat & muffler combined. Thats why I said his car is a completley different setup though. From what I hear the straight through designed Flowmasters flow pretty good, unlike the 80 series for the Fbodies.

Once again like Ken said, when it comes to mufflers its personal preference. I personally like Spintech and Hooker.

350Caprice - If you want me to round up some videos I got of different exhausts, I'll see what I can do :eh:

nothing more American for a guy to do then to put a flowmaster muffler on something, especially a police car!:ak1:

i would say go with the flows with 2 1/2" piping in/out...Lou's would give you a good deal and they do good work plus they just opened one up in Fitchburg about a month ago....if your not sure on what flowmaster muffler you want go on their website they have various sound clips of each application

Yeah, Chris, I remember when the Flowmaster cat backs first came out for those cars. You couldn't even get the dual outlet muffler in kit form because they flowed worse than the single outlet. But, enough people can't stand just one pipe (myself included) so.......
And about the Hookers, I love the sound on the Aero Chamber mufflers. Problem is, I put a set of 3" center/center on the firebird and it strangled it. Killed my low end and the car lost about 500 rpm upstairs. Sounded great but, FUCK THAT!! Needless to say they were on there for about as long as it took to order another set of bullets  Don't know if the cat back kit would do the same but I'm giving you my experience with the stuff I used. :cool2:
