this is an argument that could go on for days. i agree before, you were getting a lot more then what you paid for. as for today's jobs, i'll leave that to anyone else who cares to contribute and has direct knowledge

I'd love to you explain to me where you get that I no longer care? A comment like that deserves proof, especially when it comes from someone who I considered a friend...

You're paintjob does look phat. Matt did a phenominal job on it. He's done a lot of phenominal jobs on cars. What people tend to not understand, that in order to stay in business, a "cheap" paintjob, is not going to look fucking perfect. I can't even describe how many times I personally saw matt, redo an entire section of car, cuz it didn't come out perfect. Take a look at Jesse's father's panel wagon. Take a look at the DEEP black nomad. How long did Jesse's maro stay looking mint for? Honestly, there is no fucking reason to spend 2 weeks, spraying 10 coats of paint, wetsanding between every stage of primer and paint, just to get paid $1000. But, what do I know? I only saw matt struggle through his first year of business because he was trying to be nice.

as with anything in todays society, costs go up....operating costs, supply costs, parts costs, more employee's, technoligy evolves, etc, and consequently the price of work goes up too cover those costs and still make a lil extra to expand and get the latest and greatest things to still produce good quality work in shorter amounts of time.....time = money

to be honest, it's not so much my point that YOU no longer care, but that the shop itself doesn't have the most favorable public perception anymore. whether that is your fault or not, your Chicken. it's Chicken's Customs. you need to put two and two together and understand that if shit isn't 100% on the up and up with any aspect fo that shop, it's going to be perceived as YOUR FAULT.
unfortunately that's part of being the figurehead of a business, everything's your fault. Johnny Roastbeef doesn't like the quality of the work that was done on his car? your fault. if it was actually one of your employees that worked on Johnny Roastbeef's car? still your fault. a bolt of lightning thrown by zeus himself flew through the garage and bubbled the fresh paint on Johnny Roastbeef's mint 1919 Model T? guess who's fault? right. yours.
that's the beauty of being the guy whos name is on the sign, for better or worse. and the reality is that there have been people not happy with the work that's come out of the shop in the recent past. now if you had nothing to do with the stuff that went south, then great. but it's still your problem and you need to deal with it personally, or people aren't going to trust you as a shop.
what it all boils down to is perception. if people see you staying out of the way of conflict, not resolving situations personally even if they're not your fault, etc... then it gives off the perception that you don't care about what happens in your shop anymore. if you "allow" shoddy work to be done in your shop, it gets perceived that you don't care anymore. being the guy whos name is on the sign gives you a cross to bear to uphold your reputation, above and beyond anyone that works witrh/for you. your employees/partners/investors/pets/troll-dolls, they're all extensions of you, because your name is on the sign. if any one of them don't do their job, it's YOUR ass, because it's your reputation on the line in the minds of the paying public.
if you want people ot know you care, then you seriously have to do exactly that, let them know you care. if you hear so much as a fucking peep of discontent with something that's left your shop, you need to be on the phone with them, figuring out how to make things right. otherwise your word of mouth advertising goes from great to good to mediocre to shit...
i don't think anyone that knows you, knowns your past work, etc... can HONESTLY say that you don't have the potential to be doing great work. but if you're not up in the customers face when something isn't up to their expectations, trying to figure out how you can make it perfect, then you're going to be perceived as someone who's losing interest in the quality of his work and service.
it sounds like you DO care, though, based on your reply to my post. so keep that in mind whenever anything rolls into your bay.
now, i don't have a problem admitting when i'm outta line, and the original post i made probably was in rather poor taste.
the thing is, though, the statement is basically the same whether i use your name or the shop. that's because whether you like it or not, you ARE the shop, and the shop is MATT, and anything that happens directly affects your reputation.

THESE PEOPLE THAT YOU SPEAK OF SHOULD TALK TO THE OWNERS (MATT AND PAUL) ABOUT THE PROBLEMS THAT THEY HAVE WITH THE WORK THAT WAS DONE, IF THESE PEOPLE EVEN EXIST, INSTEAD OF GOING AROUND AND TALKING SHIT ABOUT THIER BUSINESS. AS FAR AS I KNOW FROM BEING AROUND THE SHOP NOBODY DONE THERE HAS HEARD OF ANYBODY BEING UNHAPPY WITH THIER WORK (EXCEPT FOR ONE). AS WE ALL KNOW THIER BUSINESS REVOLVES MOSTLY AROUND WORD OF MOUTH. SO THESE PEOPLE YOU SPEAK OF ARE MOST LIKELY CONSIDERED FRIENDS, OR A FRIEND OF A FRIEND, OF MATT AND PAUL, AND SHOULD GROW SOME BALLS AND SAY SOMETHING TO THEM INSTEAD OF GOING AND POTENTIONALLY HURTING THE REPUTATION THAT THEY HAVE. REMEMBER ITS NOT JUST MATT'S REPUTATION THAT YOUR HURTING, ITS ALSO PAUL'S, DON'S, MIKE'S, AND TIMMY'S. SO CUT THE SHIT. ANOTHER THING TO KEEP IN MIND IS THAT NOT EVERYONE IS GOING TO BE SATISFIED, THATS JUST A WAY OF LIFE, SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST NEVER HAPPY NO MATTER WHAT IS DONE. THIS IS A PART OF OWNING A BUSINESS THAT MATT AND PAUL HAVE TO DEAL WITH. BUT FOR SOME ONE TO COME ON THIS PUBLIC BOARD AND TALK SHIT ABOUT THEM IS FUCKED, AND THEY SHOULD WORRY ABOUT THIER OWN SHIT. THAT IS ALL I HAVE TO SAY FOR NOW. :shoot2: :shoot2:

Yes, but what Devin said is true (his rebuttal). Reputation in this business is a very large aspect of a business. Speaking in general terms, not specifically about any shop... Most of the time, people won't go back to a shop that they have received less then good work from, because a.) they are pussies and b.) usually, nothing gets done about it anyway. That's just the way MOST businesses are run. Now, from experience of talking to Paul a LOT, I know that Paul likes to make his customers happy, within reason. I don't know how Matt interacts with customers at this point, because, I don't talk to Matt. But, I'd assume its on the same level as Paul, as that's their standard order of business.
Needless to say, I've talked to a few people who have had work done there, and were unhappy. I told them to go back and talk to either Matt or Paul, and I think in every case, the problems were fixed to the satisfaction of the customer. I think a vast majority of the people who are REALLY unhappy, tend to be those who are used to the "old" pricing scheme and don't like the fact, that as a legit shop, they are now charging more money (still reasonable prices) for the work they do.
At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. It's just up to a shop's owner(s) whether they want to push "cheap" jobs out, as they tend to look, well, cheap. Either way, that's my stance on the whole deal. I don't really care one way or the other. My general opinion on businesses is this. I expect top notch service, regardless of where I go. From fast food, to auto repair. If I don't get it, I go elsewhere. When it comes to the product though, I am usually pretty lenient on quality/$$, as long as I feel I am being treated fairly.

blah blah blah gobble the dick
so you pretty much said devin is a liar, there are no unhappy customers and if there really are any, then they're never gonna be happy and should shut up? i personally have talked to a couple unhappy customers, most of which it was resolved and in one instance, paul had to lose money on the deal just to make the customer happy. very admirable and thats how you run a business, you do what you have to even if it means losing money now and then to make everyone happy. true, sometimes you get customers who aren't happy, i had to deal with one last week. they're pains in the ass and you have to pull money and time out of your pocket to make things right, but its worth it in the end when they tell their friends that you went out of your way to make them happy. sure they might turn around and say well, it shouldnt have happened in the first place. but most of the time their friends know they bitch all the time anyways, and as long as the effort was made to make things right, then the friend will usually trust the company. (i have friends who will bitch no matter what, so this is how i know). at the end of the week, you need EVERY customer to be at least 90% happy with the quality, timeline and price. if they're not, the business will tank. thats just the reality of it. its true, you get what you pay for. before you got a LOT more then you paid for, matt took a beating for that for a while. but if the price is going to go up, the expectations must go up drasticly to match this. some people don't feel this is the case.
tim: you're right, costs go up. but at the same time more labor and better technology shouldn't do shit to the price of the job, it just means you can turn around more work. if i hire two guys this week and in a month my profits have gone down, i don't increase the price to make up for it. i fire the people who are slowing me the fuck down. also, if i buy new guns and staplers that shoot faster and more accurate that make me work faster, my price won't go up, i just get more done, which increases profits. so your logic was correct, but a couple small points were off. figured id point them out so you know for the future
