View Full Version : 396 stroker?

So, here is the current thought for the caprice. I am thinking about building a 396 stroker for the car. I have already found the stroker kit ($2000) which is a BUILT lower end assembly. Should be good for juice if I decide to ever do that. Heads I am not sure yet. Thinking about AFR heads, but they are a little pricey, at around $1800 for a ported set. Not sure if a stock set of AFRs would be enough breathing room for that many cubes. There are a lot of people who have built these engines, and once tuned, the engine puts down around 500hp at the crank.
My main reason for going to a 396 instead of a 383 is purely out of coolness factor. I really want to put "SS 396" badges on the car. So, what does everyone think of this?

Had a 396 in my 72 Chevelle SS, great motors with alot of bottom end.:smokin:

LOL I didn't even catch the stroker part of it, my bad. Do you use the 400 crank in the 396 configuration? I have never seen a 396 stroker, just the 383.

They have a 396 stroker kit for the stock LT1 350 block. 383 is very common, but the 396 is relatively new. Although, from more reading, I am doubting myself doing that. 383 may be better. Its cheaper and less headaches.

Hmm I dunno if its worth the extra money and risk. Risk being that you will have to grind more out of the block for crank and rod clearance.
On my motor, same stroke as a 383...me and my father clearanced the block ourselves. Alot of trial fit/testing had to go on. I put the bottom end together 5 times total, I could prob do it with my eyes closed by now hahaha. Mostly rods to oil pan rail, and rods to the bottoms of the cylinder walls. My point is though, if you run into a water jacket while clearancing because of the 3.875" stroke (I think thats the size for the 396??)....you will be kicking yourself in the ass that you didn't go with a 383.
Then again...people also said the same shit about my motor, but I like it and thats all that matters right?

Yeah, i am debating the 383 now. Just not sure what i want to do for heads. I looked up supercharger kits, but they are STUPID expensive. I really don't know what I want to do now.

If you decide to go 396, a company called Nu-Tek Motorsports makes some nice crate motors. They have a nice list of parts you can choose from too.

Yeah, i've been there. I don't want to spend the money they want for a shortblock. I'd rather piece something together myself, although their "kits" seem decently priced.

I have AFR 210's on my 383 took them out of the box and bolted them on. I am getting work done to them this winter, but I am pretty happy with how they have performed so far. They said the 190's would be better with a 383 street motor, but mine isn't exactly a typical street motor. So it depends on the rest of your combination, I know a guy that has a set on of the 220's on a 406 and is running low tens on motor. So I think the AFR's will be fine for your motor. And the 210s come with springs for a solid roller with 220lbs on the seat closed and good for like .700 lift. I ran them all this year with a ton of miles and none of them broke.

i agree,i have afr 210's on the small block tat was in my car that ran 11.8's un-tuned 2.0 60 foot. great heads, kinda big for th 355 inches that motor is, but it revs like a mofo.

THanks for the info. I will call AFR and get some pricing on heads. I think 190's would be enough for me with a 383, as I don't plan on building a SICK motor. I will check into it. I will come back if I have more questions.

Not to mention with a 396 you have alot better chance of pulling the rings out of the bottom of the bore on the downstroke. you can't fit a long enough rod in the motor to compensate for the increased stroke, and you only have so much room at the top of the piston to crush the rings together. With a higher stroke the motor longetivity will be null because when the crank is coming around it will actually be trying to push the piston through the side of the bore rather than up the bore, and if you plan on driving and beating on it all summer you be going through blocks.

I have had some bad dealing with Nick Norris who owns and runs Nu-Tek as did a few others from another board . But thats a long story and now it's pretty much resolved .
I have a 396 LT1 that has AFR 195 heads and that make a great combo for a Nitrous motor , but as someone said earlier I wanted the "396" badges :) .
I bought my internals from http://www.cmotorsports.com and had a local machine shop do all their work .
