6 bolt motors are the way to go, they have stronger rods(bigger ) and can typically handle 500 WHP. All 90-91 and most 92 cars have 6 bolts, 93 and newer are 7 bolt.

7 bolt is slightly faster because it is lighter, but like Mike said, it is also weaker (only an issue between 400-500whp). But it really does not matter on a street engine.

Here is some more info on it:

thanks for the info guys. so the stock 7 bolt can handle 400whp? but the stock 6 bolt can handle 500? lol, damn thats sick. i knew i had a 7 because i have a 94 that was bone stock when i got it. how fast could a full interior 94 go with 400whp? what in the transfer case do i need to upgrade? can i just upgrade to the 4 spyder or whatever it is, or do i need to get a new center diff? i dont know crap about AWD cars, so thank you guys.

Well, for what it's worth I have about 400WHP, and I'm pulling 122mph traps and consistent 11s in my full interior street car. The only upgrades I've done to my drivetrain are a better clutch (ACT2600) and a Speed Design 4 spider gear center diff. I haven't touched the transfer case.

I'm still running my stock 7-bolt bottom end. The only changes to the top end have been ARP head studs and HKS 264i/264e cams. If you want to meet up sometime and check out the rest of the stuff I've done, let me know...

Oh yeah, that's right. I really need to put faces to the names again and really get all of this straight one of these days.

I picked up the center diff for about $400, already modded from a guy who was parting out his car. Just the mods alone to turn it into a 4-gear are about that, so I gladly took it to have a spare diff just in case.

I swapped it myself. The first time, never having done this before, took a while. I could probably do it again in 2-3 hours tops. It's not too bad.

I'll swing by when you do it this spring, if you need a hand.

oh, i dont expect you to remember me at all. i only talked to you for a 3 minutes and i wasnt near my truck, which is the easiest way to remember me. im 5'9", shaved heqad, gotee and about 180-200 pounds (depends on the week lol).

so what else is needed to do the swap besides the 4 spider itself? i might actually do it, or have it done, fairly soon so i can play in the snow and worry about one less thing. if it only takes a couple hours, ill just have chicken do it. hes used to havin them apart and its not worth the little money it would cost for labor for me to bust my knuckles and have to lay on my back in gravel and probably in the snow.

A DSM competent shop should be able to install a center diff for around $100-$150. Regular shop might charge a lot more...

Speed Design center diff upgrade is $550
BM Tranny does not have as good of produce, IMO, but they are cheaper at $400.

This on top of ~$150-$200 diff price, so $400 for Speed Design is a bargain!
