Thats not the issue... As some people know I was involved in an accident going 30 and someone still died wearing a full face helmet... So how did it help?

i'd rather have that much more protection
the ratio of dead people vs live people in crashes involving half shells vs full i would imagine is great.. i'd find data to back it up but i'm lazy right now..
there are D.O.T. approved half shells, but i'm assuming your talking about the novelty half shells w/ tissue paper for padding..

Yeah I was but that doesnt mean I'll get one.. I have full faced helmets now but now that I'm riding a cruiser I want a half, I was just wondering why so many people wear them if they arent legal, and why they arent enforced? Or are they?

my dad has one. he got a DOT sticker from another guy at work who knows someone that makes them. guys on harleys never get their balls busted. even if you get pulled over, most cops have no clue what they're looking for on a bike. i got pulled over with illegal blinkers (integrated into the tail), no plate light, a sticker that expired in 04, and a plate tucked up behind the wheel so you couldn't see it. all i got was a ticket for speeding and lecture about how bikes will kill me if i kept it up. (cop was obviously a "safe" person with a corolla."

as to the accident with the person going 30mph. that isn't the norm, we know that. some shit happens though, esp when it comes to head trama. if you hit something that doesn't move head first, you're fucked no matter what you wear. but if you wear a full face helmet, low side the bike going 30-60mph and hit your head on the side, you'll probably just get a concusion. you do that with a skull cap, and you're dead. sure there are a few examples where you're dead no matter what you wear, but those only account for 10-15% of drops. for the other 85-90%, i'll take a full face any day.

Speaking from experience the novelty ones will get you buy unless you get a prick of a cop that will take the time to check for a DOT sticker. The same type of cop the will stick a night stick in the pipes to see if they have baffles. Now most of the skull caps have the DOT right on the back of them so they are in plain view the olders didnt they were on the insides. Just my .02 worth I would get the a real DOT approved skull cap there are ones out there that weight as little as the novelty ones, just to save the trouble and this is coming from someone that doesnt like to wear helmets at all.

I've never ridden with anything but full face but feels nice to whip around the parking lot and what not without one.. The whole reason for riding a bike is that out in the open feeling and the wind.. You cant feel that with a full face..

I personally right now wear a full face and keep the visor open with a set of impact glasses because I like the wind..

I hear ya i just dont like the lack of hearing some of the blind spots plus the weight of a full face. I dont mind them on my sled maybe cause of the seating position but on a sport bike they do.

I know I know weve been down this road already about helmets yes the more expensive ones are lighter better vision and hearing.

Anyways last year was the first time in awhile I had been on a bike for any type of distace going to Laconia so I wore the fullface on the way up but as soon as I got of the Highwy the helmet came off and didnt go back on till the mass boarder on the ride home. Plus it was 100 degrees out when we left that day so it was nice not to have the extra heat.

My personal preference is a skull cap or none at all.

If you wanna get a good half helmet get the skid lid brand helmet, these are as low profile without getting a beanie helmet, I have tried a beanie and didn't like it, it was a weird feeling. I actually wear my skid lid backwards and it's way more comfortable.

Go with the skid lid it's the only helmet i have.

mike i had one of those nazi helmets but they are uncomfortable for me so i sold it at a flea market. The novelty helmets for those fit much better.
