so i took the cover off my rear end today, first thing is there was NO fluid in it, not too healthy. The ring gear was kinda chewed up and a couple pieces of it were in the housing. BUT the posi MIGHT be ok.

Jesse you think you could take a look at it sometime this week? i can drop off the whole center section if you need it. if i can get away with just a new set of ring and pinion gears, then ill keep my 10 bolt til i blow it up for real. even if i need a new posi or need to rebuild mine, it would still end up being a lot cheaper than a whole new rearend.

Also, anyone here know how to set my lash? i had some nasty ticking before and need to straighten it out, but i dont know how.

plus side is if i dont need to get a new rear end i can spend this weeks poker winnings on some other goodies, probably a new cam and intake manifold and maybe some roller rockers, not sure, gotta square the rear first.

thanks

if its hydraulic, and the car is still together and running, just warm the car up and do it while its running......

its way easier to get them all dead on that way.

after you warm the car up, just pull the valve covers, and start on one end, and loosen the rocker until it starts clacking.....then slowly tighten it up until the clacking noise disappears.....then give it another 1/4 - 1/2 turn and lock it down (if you have locks)

if you have really good poly locks, you can go as little as a 1/8 turn of pre load.

if the motor is apart, your gonna have to get the sequence from a service manual, which i cant remember off the top of my head.......start at top dead center, and you can adjust such and such a number exhaust valves, and such and such intake valves....then do one full crank revolution, and you can adjust etc etc.

i'll get the sequence for you up here tonight.

for solid lifters, same as above with the motor off....only you use a feeler gauge and set the lash to the spec......we usually run them a little tight though

valve lash, sorry Dude, it's a pontiac motor, unless someone swapped in polylocks they're non adjustable. Most of them have a slight tick, just deal with it unless it's really loud, all mine have done it to some extent....

ill check it out, if its not too bad ill just deal with it, last time i started it up it sounded pretty bad, but it was pretty cold then too, so well see what happens when i put a new carb + manifold on it this week and start it up
