i'm looking for a standard tranny that would take 400 crank hp. as you all know i'm looking for a third gen but i really want a stick. i was thinking about getting a 350 (only came in auto), and putting a standard tranny. what 5 or 6 speed trannies would hold up to this? and could i find one used anywhere? i'm kinda short on funds.

Two tranny options. T-5 and T-56. A T-5 in stock form won't handle 400hp for very long. A T-56 in stock form will handle as much as YOU will ever throw at it.

T-56's can be found at junkyards. Probably around $1300, not including the flywheel or clutch.

A T5 will hold 400 hp as long as you don't abuse it and aren't launching at 5000 RPM on slicks. There are many guys w/ 10 second cars that have T5's. You could get a Tremec 5spd or a T56 if you wanted something stronger. Some of the Tremec's will hold more power than a T56, but most tremecs are notchy and lack the smooth shifting you get from a T5.

no offense dude, but t5's are rated at like 265 ft/lbs.....and usually wont take that forever.

i have 3 in the trailer, that were all blown up in normal driving behind 305's.

ive personally ruined several, without beating them at all.....its not a great transmission, and a great asset at the track

get a tremec or a t56.....my tremec has been abused for 3 years now and is holding up fine to over 500hp at the crank, and spencer can vouch for the launches it can handle as he's seen me at the track before.

there are like 100+ passes on it

its alot cheaper to rebuild a tremec or t56 to handle serious power too

There are a number of versions of the T-5. The worst ones are out of 4 cyl cars. The best is a world class close ratio. The gears are a bit stronger and the ratios are better. I've got one of these in my Cobra. It came from a guy on Long Island.....I think it's something like D&L transmission. He takes used cases and builds to your specifications with all new parts. Cost me $830 shipped. If you're interested in a Tremec, call Mike Forte (Forte's Parts Connection) in Burlington. He can tell you any spec off the top of his head and specializes in them. Besides the power considerations, think about the weight of the car. My Cobra's only 2200 lbs, so the T-5 is fine for me. If you're in a heavy car (Mustang, Camaro, etc) then a Tremec is a worthwhile investment. If you're going that route, I'd think a TKO is going to be a better option, so you can uprate your power later.

yes....i was just about to zing you with how light cobras are, but you nailed the whole thing.....that trans is fine for a light car like that.......

however, know ahead of time that mike forte is a pain in the ass to deal with.....if you go to his store, dont let him tell you to hold on a minute or anything, make him give you what you want right now, otherwise you will stand there for at least an hour.....and dont take his shit, give it right back to him.....he loves that

Get the Tremec, it's as close to bullet proof as you'll need yet still fairly "streetable."
