It all depends on what your gonna do with it etc,
I have seen quite a few rebuilt crate engines and none are particularly hi quality, the most memroable 1 blew a head gasket with the 1st 100 miles, so when the heads came off 1 was a small chamber and 1 was a large chamber "smog" head, so the compression was off a ton from 1 side of the engine to the other.

Thats the worst thing i have ever seen

the gm 260hp crate motor is a pretty good deal (1299 from jegs, 1500 from summit)....throw in another cam, and a cheap set of home ported heads, 300hp easilly for well under 2k...my pops is gonna buy one soon, throw in a comp XE262, and some ported L98's from my uncle, we'll be into it for less than 1500 for a decent reliable motor that'll have 300hp easilly

the fact is, even if you dont use the smogger heads and small cam from that motor, its still a 4 bolt main block with pm rods....the zz4 short block is 2k...this one just has 8.5 compression, but thats no big deal if you use some thin head gaskets and/or plane the heads to bump it up... or just leave the thing as a stock motor and go...
