I am looking to do a bunch of work on my Durango. I want to brush up on my “V8”. It has been since high school since I put together my last V8 engine :). I am now finding that Dodge experts are hard to find…
I am also looking for anyone who has done some work on 46RE tranny.
Thanks,
Leon

What exactly are you looking to do? Tranny wise, I think Bottledbird68 knows someone who can help out with your tranny. Motor wise, its tough without some initial data about what you are looking to do? Tune? Build up the motor? Give more details please.

Yes, I know someone who's been doing trannies longer than I've been alive, and he's a mopar guy to boot  What are you looking for?

Last night, I took the engine apart down to a short block. Cylinders had a very minor layer or rust on them. It appears that rust came off with some oil. So far, I am planning on re-using the short block. Though I am going to re-do the heads, give them a mild port job and put it all together with Cometic gaskets and ARP studs.
I just have to decide if it is worth going with oversized valves. And then, I will have to have pick the right cam shaft. This is going to be mainly my tow vehicle (with some kick to it :) ).
Tranny is a matching 46RE (my 5.2 came with 44RE) with aprox 60k miles. I would like to have someone who known their trannys to check it out and maybe put a TransGO shift kit while at it.

I know of KRC and Fastman, unfortunately having them look at my tranny will automatically add $300 to the cost due shipping charges :(.
Who is this local Mopar tranny expert? :)

If you found rust on the cylinder walls, you should have the block honed to clean it up correctly.
I have a Dakota R/T at the shop right now that I'm installing headers and complete dual exhaust, and also installing a Paxton S/C should be a quick little truck when i'm done.

the best 46re guy i know of is martin saine, hes out in cali, so youd have to pay shipping. i can get you all his info if you want, he can do everything custom from mild to bullet proof. his trannys are behind all the major Dakota RT guy's trucks with blowers and juice. if you're on any of the yahoo message boards, do a search for dakota RT, theres a huge board on there and the guys can tell you anything you need to know plus some.

>If you found rust on the cylinder walls, you should have the block honed to clean it up correctly.
You are correct, this is right way to do it… But if I pull those pistons/rods, I am going to replace them forged components, something I would rather not do at this point. So I am going to take my chance with the cleaned up rust. Believe me when I say that this rust was very minor! BTW, I believe that most cars that have sat outdoors for 2-3 years must have similar rust, due to condensation. Most people just do not realize that :).

Are you going to use the stock intake manifold? The main reason why I am not putting this SC on my 318, is because of Magnum intake. It has enough problems with not blowing its gasket under vacuum, I hate to see what would happen when it sees boost!
What headers are you putting on it?

the stock beer barrel intake shouldnt blow gaskets at all, the belly pan gasket shits the bed all the time, but you can have that welded or get an upgraded unit to solve this problem. there are guys pushing some serious power with the stock beer barrel thats been ported and shortened for better low end with NO problems other then choking it at higher RPMs. i would suggest getting an M1 2bbl anyways unless its used for towing all the time, even that can be worked out with a PCM flash that will change the fuel and spark maps. if you do the M1 with no PCM change there will be a hesitation issue off idle due to the fuel maps being WAY off, the mopar PCM will help this some, but doesnt solve it. the only thing that does is a custom flash, which is now down to $430 plus shipping one way (they use your stock PCM). if you swap the M1 with the flashed PCM, it feels like a mac truck is up your ass pushing you, its truely night and day. i could look up my dyno charts, but i believe i gained 2ft/lbs, 45hp or so, and raised the powerband only a couple hundred RPM. i can send someone a dyno sheet if they wanna post it, for a bolt on truck motor, its pretty damn nice. also, the best headers are made by GS Motorsports www.GSMotorsports.com not sure if they will fit a durango, if you email him im sure hes tried it before. they're long tubes, the shorties are OK, but really not great. the gains are decent, but thats because the stock ones sucked so much. he has dyno sheet comparisons on his site with the headers.

> the belly pan gasket shits the bed all the time,
Yep, that is what I was talking about. If it easily blows that gasket under vacuum (when sheet metal plate is being pushed into the manifold), it will fail in no time under boost (when it is being pushed away from the intake).
>the stock beer barrel thats been ported and shortened for better low end with NO

As you know, I port all sort of DSM parts, so I am not stranger to this type of work. I did some research and I am going to modify the barrel intake. I will shorten the runners, port it for a larger TB, port match it to the RT heads and then weld on an aluminum plate.
>i would suggest getting an M1 2bbl anyways unless its used for towing all the time
That is the thing, I must keep in mind that this truck is first my tow vehicle, so M1 is out for me. Its powerband is way too high for what I want to do with the truck.

How much torque did you loose under 2k rpms? If you can, send the sheet to grndsm@excite.com .
>also, the best headers are made by GS Motorsports www.GSMotorsports.com not
>sure if they will fit a durango,
They definitely have the BEST headers out there! But at $600 (not including the Y-tube, which is $220 more), they are difficult to justify… I am considering ceramic coated Edelbrock system with the Y-tube for around $420.

modifying the BB intake will help a TON, but it will fall on its face around 4200-4500 or so still. not bad for a tow vehicle, but not great if you like to race it. i have NO clue what i lost below 2k because we started the dyno at 2k-2300 i believe. do you have the program to view the dynojet files from NEDT? if not i can see if i can copy them and put them into a different type of file (i suck at computer things). and the GSM headers might be pricey, but they are GREAT. i paid $700 for my hooker mid tubes ceramic coated from jet hot with a Y pipe. the Y has been in my garage since i installed them because i run true dual. the GSMs dont come with the Y because most people buy the spintech true dual that bolts right up to it. im not sure what the gains are with the edlebrocks, only a couple people have them.

I know that depends on the amount of work done and on who is doing it, but I have heard that you can get as much as 5500rpms out of this intake. I am going to try to give it a shot…
>do you have the program to view the dynojet files from NEDT?
I do not, though I should get it, as they have a bunch of my Green Machine runs :).
>im not sure what the gains are with the edlebrocks, only a couple people have them.
I am finding out the same, very few people are using Edelbrock headers. I know that shorty headers are not ideal, but as far as shorty headers go, I believe that Edelbrocks are one of the best…

Well I ran into a problem the truck is just sitting there at the shop for now.
They sent us the exhaust for an extended cab truck his is a regular cab.
we are dynoing the truck with the exhaust first then put the blower on then dyno again so he has dyno sheets for each mod.

Also how do you know its Phils truck that is here?

ok, theres no way i can find to copy the image into a different file form and i dont have a working digital. so ill just give you the numbers, id tell you where they are, but the revvs are off for some reason, my first set of runs were stock and i know they were at about 2k, but it says they started at 3+k :eh: . here are the numbers though
stock: 214/290
M1 4bbl with turtle (which is supposed to be less power then the 2bbl, but it was cheap from a friend), B&G M1 flash, K&N cone filter and electric fan: 251/304
above plus hooker headers and 3" true dual with cats: 265/332
i have more now because of my 1.7RRs and i have an UDP sitting here waiting install. im also going to port the TB, i dont wanna spend the $500-600 on a billet one right now. next time i go ill see how low they can start it without it down shifting (which my PCM tells it to do now VERY fast)

FYI: i have 320-300 FT.lbs from 3200-4700 rpm, so just keep it one gear lower then usual and you'll be set with towing lol, gas mileage might not be that great, but oh well lol:thumbsup:
