I was just thinking, when you paint ghost flames, do you put the pearl on top of the basecoat?? Or is it mixed in with the clearcoat?

Any pros/cons to either method?

pearl goes on the base then you clear the whole thing...you couldnt mix it with doing flames....you wouldnt see them.

i dont think he could mix it with the clear, unless the front half was still masked off

Exactly what I'm sayin. Like if he masked off the flames, mixed the pearl in with the clear, then sprayed.

then the rest of the car would have no clear on it.

He could clear the rest after he peeled the masking tape off. Then after wetsanding, you wouldn't feel a line.

I dunno I just thought I heard somewhere that It can be mixed in with the clearcoat.

to do it the right way that way, he'd have to mask off the rest of the car, shoot the flames with pearl, wait for it to dry, then mask off the flames so the rest of the car is exposed and shoot with clear.....thats to do it the right way, which is wayyyyy too much work

You wouldn't want to mix the pearl with regular clearcoat. You could but it would be far more trouble than it's worth and seems like a retarded way of doing things. What you may be referring to however is a flat mixing clear. Basically it's just clear basecoat that some people use as a binder for the pearl. It acts the same as a basecoat does so everything is compatible and fairly easy to work with. I usually just take the pearl and add reducer to it. I'ts a lot thinner this way so you need to be a little more careful to get even coverage with it. But, in the end the coats where the flames are are much thinner. That makes it FAR easier to wetsand and buff if you are looking to get rid of the "bump" around the flame edge in the paint. To put it into perspective, on Paul's (silver maro with the red and silver flames for the newbs)car I had multiple coats of stuff that made the paint build up a lot from all the different layers. After pouring on the clearcoats and letting it dry I spent 25 (yes, 25, not a typo) hours wetsanding and buffing that car to remove the edges. By just reducing the pearl with no clear you practically eliminate that edge and it makes wetsanding much, much, easier.

i'm not a pro here, hahah, but i think that woudl be the right way because if you were gonna mix the pearl/clear then you'd have to shoot the rest of the car in clear, and if you didn't wanna put 1 more coat on the front and make it uneven, you'd have to reverse mask it so the line would be perfect.....theoretically of course
