I am lookin to buy a bike but the guy owes money on the bike so he does not have the title in hand. What precautions should I take and what is the general procedure in handling this matter. The amount I am paying for the bike is enough to pay off the remaining balance of the loan.

i'd be weary.. if your paying the amount he's got left on the loan your getting the raw end of the deal... bikes usualy depreciate in value quick.. depends on how many miles, type of bike, model, cc's etc.. post up some pictures, stats, etc..

i take it your the winner... i dunno, something doesn't feel right about it to me... he doesn't mention on the auction that the bike has a lean on it.. that in itself would put me off... i would have checked out the bike in person since it's in the same state, before bidding on it and commiting myself... since now your in a legal binding contract to buy the item.. if he wanted to be a dick about it... and the winning bid is $4,809.00

Well im not the winning bidder but the winning bidder is a deadbeat. I am going to check out the bike before I hand him any cash whatsoever. I have been in contact with him before the auction ended and requested him to end the auction early but he wanted to let it run its course I got outbid at the last second. And now the winner does not want the bike.

I bought a bike from a guy in new hampshire that had a bank note on it. All you have to do is get a bill of sale and take the bike with you when you buy it. It took the guy about a week to get the title for me.

Talk to his bank. Get the amount owed FROM THE BANK. Then, a bill of sale, as stated before, with a clause stating that the title shall be handed to you within two weeks. Have the bank notorize the "Bill of Sale" and make sure to pay with a bank check, not cash.

:stupid: as long as you have the bike in hand and the paper trail signed by him (bill of sale) stating that you own it and paid for it, you should be fine. the easiest way to take care of it, is to take a day off from work or go after work with him and pay the bank off for the bike. that way you know its done.

Or, make a bank check out to the BANK, so it has to be used to pay it off.

The remaining balance after the payoff if any will be paid back to the person you are buying the bike from.. Its still not guaranteed that your gonna get the title afterwards.
Also the bank wont tell you what the payoff is. Its not your account and they arent allowed to give out info on someone else.

What I meant more, is a statement, showing the remaining balance, from the bank. Not just the kid's word. He is more then capable of getting a statement that will show that.

Yea the kid has all the paperwork from the bank or so he says. The best solution seems to make a bank check out to the bank for the amount of the payoff. I am debating renting an open uhaul trailer to bring the thing back with me. I have a truck but driving it into the back of the truck is scary. What do you guys think? The trailer is only $20. I live in worcester what is a good location to pick it up from?

i would make sure maintence has been done on the bike ... also i am not sure but double check but i thoguht around 10k miles that a bike would need valve adjustments and other maintence ....it seems like a cheap bike but it seems cheap for a 636 ....i would take the thing out for a ride or have somenoe ride it for you that can tell and listen for weird noises as last thing u want is a bike that needs work

just put it in the bed of your truck. use bike staps, one on each clip on, and its fine. i put my 600rr in the bed of my dakota a ton of times with no problems and i drive like an asshole. just make sure you strap it down tight enough to load the front suspension pretty good and tie the slack of the stap into a knot so it won't loosen up. you can get good straps at any bike store around for $20-30. and like mystic said, check for maintence records, esp if its near 8k miles, if its been riden hard it will need the adjustment early. those aren't cheap. if it only has 7k or less miles on it, its worth it. for that price its actually even worth it if it needs the adjustment, but it sucks to spend 5k on something then have to bring it right to the dealer for work.

My whole problem is getting into the bed of the truck. It is an s10 which is fairly low to the ground but I do not own any ramps. I figure renting the uhaul would be cheaper than buying bike ramps and easier to load. Yea I will definetly check the maintenance in the auction he states that the bike has been checked up recently at the dealer of course people will say anything to sell something so I will ask for some paperwork.

if it looks clean and doesn't make any motor noise, then its fine.

get a ramp from a bike place, im sure you'll use it later and they arent very expensive. check sears for their lawn tractor ramps too, i kno theyre pretty cheap.

ive used a 16' 2x10 a couple times, only problem is him trying to fit it into an S-10. even an 8 footer doesnt fit that good and if he uses one that short, it might slide off the tailgate.

Well I picked the bike up yesterday. I will post pics up later. It needs the valves done at 11k it has 10k on it now so I may just go ahead and do it. Is it difficult to do yourself? How much does a shop charge?

This is just a complete and utter guess, but you'd probably be better off finding a reputable shop to do the valvejob.

im not sure what it involes, it might be like my old SHO yamaha motor where the valves need to be shimmed :eh: i can't see it being too difficult no matter what as long as you can read directions and have the proper tools, but its going to be a BITCH to get at no matter what. see what a shop charges, if its more then you feel like paying, buy the shop manual CD and see if you feel up to it.

you have to shim the valves on my bike. and you have to take the motor out because there ins't enough room under the frame to pull the head off...not sure if his bike is like that though, my bikes is pretty small
