Now that my father and I am getting ready to tear the bike apart again we are debating getting the frame raked out a little bit. My dad is beginning to get second thoughts because allegedly it will make the bike a lot less enjoyable to ride. Basically I am looking for more opinions how how this will change the characteristics of the bike. I did a quick pshop of what I think would look good

Here is before:

it'll make the steering less responsive and twitchy but it wont turn in as easily

just leave it classic

if you get the frame altered doesn't it have to be by an approved facility, as well as get the bike inspected by the state? if you go the "legal" route that is... i'm with spencer, wrong measurements and your fucked.. leave it a classic, or pay a reputable shop to do the work.

I like it how it is :eh:

Then again, I've seen how much time and effort has gone into how it looks now...

My dad wants to keep the back as it is. I wanted to make it a hard tail.

If we have this done we would not dare do it ourselves. We would be bringing it somewhere that actually knows what they are doing. This brings up another question: Does anyone know of a reputable shop to do something like this?

The bike isn't really a "classic" anymore. At shows they are making us enter it in the "Custom" classes because it doesn't look anything like it did from the factory. This is what an orginal would look like:

DO NOT MAKE IT HARD TAIL IF YOU PLAN TO RIDE IT. it is NOT worth the ride to make it look that little bit cooler. you don't need to do anything structural, just change the paint and wheel combo and you're set. maybe bars, different tank, just do it OCC style, bolt a couple things on and you're set. no need to go radical

FYI its illegal in MA to have a "modified" frame you need a new one with a certificate of origin.

lucky's cycle in oxford, its the old head mechanic that was at sheldons for about 20 years or whatever, and the shop is located inside of a welding/fab shop (a.f.t. services, willy knows his shit, navy cert. welder).....they've modified/built a couple custom frames/jigs before, came out really nice & they're all professionals there...not a bunch of clowns

Not worried about it.
A) you should see the inspection process when you bring a bike from 1962 with antique plates.
B) Do you think they would even notice? It's not like we are going to put on 7 foot fork, that will stay the same length.

However I am worried about any sort of safety aspect of doing this, but I think as long as we take it to a reputable shop we will be fine.

Bingo...thank you, this is exactly what I'm looking for. Anyone else have any experience with them?

I would say go for it. Me and my brother have my fathers 69 bonneville in the garage right now as a rolling chassis that we hope to put back together over the winter.
