View Full Version : Hole in gas tank!

The guy before me dumped my bike and repaired it, apparently the hole in the gask tank wasn't plugged well, I rode home and watch 3 gallons of gas drip onto the ground. How do I fill the hole? Its a tiny bit larger than the diameter of a pen. Its at the bottom edge, so filling it in shouldn't be too hard. I'm heading out right now to get a temporary fix, but a permanent solution is always nice.

PULL THE TANK ... DRAIN IT ... LET IT SIT TO GET SOME FUMES OUT AND WELD IT... IF NOT GO BUY THE GAS TANK REPAIR GARBAGE AND CROSS YOUR FINGERS

Thanks, I guess I'll weld it when it comes off the road in a week or two.

Make sure you drain it and allow it to sit (with the cap off) long enough to let all the gas evap (gas filler up)

dont just let it sit to get the fumes out wash it out with water a few times, warm water works better, then dump it all out and dry it up with air and a vacum...then weld it/braze it or what ever then wash the whole thing out with acetone to get any moisture out and line it or u can get the brush on top kote stuff to just go over the weld... we do gas tank repair at my work for bikes/cars... good luck

ebay, get a used tank for dirt, don't have to deal with shit. i just don't trust a welded gas tank when its between my legs.

I'm doing that right now, but I would quite say for dirt. These tanks were made for 2 years in the 80s, it's hard to find one, let alone for cheap.

The most popular Honda street bike forums that deal with the 80s VFRs that I find only have like a post every other day. The later VFR (90+) have different mounting tabs and the petcock is on the bike, not the tank, from what I see. Some guy in England sold one a few weeks ago for like $40, but shipping would have been brutal if he even would.
