I got into an argument while doing inventory in auburn the otherday with this kid from the hudson store, i told him about teh site hes got a pretty sweet 87 cutlass 3.8 turbo its cool and a 90 talon , some mods ect. So we are talking about rear end swaps and he keeps insisting that the monte ss came with an 8.5 inch 10 bolt and i told him no it didnt and he kept sticking to it, so if this is the case why would everyone push for the grand national rear or hurst olds rear, which are typically 3.42 geared 8.5 in the buick and 3.73 in the hurst (not the442)? spence im sure u have the correct answer for me

You're right. Monte SS came with 7.625" 10 bolt, the same peice of shit thats in my car. All the Grand Nationals (and T-types) came with the larger 8.5" 3.42 rearend.

SickboySS has a 7.625 in his car. (86 MC SS)

yes, chris is right....but, for the price you're gonna spend for a 8.5" in decent condition, you can build a budget 9" that'll hold up to alot more abuse....the 7.5" is a piece, and i know mine will go boom eventually, but the way i think of it - no traction no harm.....so i'm not gonna do any major suspension mods in the back

There's guys running 11's and 10's in Impala SS's and Caprices all around the country, and one that I know of in the 9's. They're all doing it through an 8.5 inch 10 bolt, and most if not all of those cars are cutting 1.6 60's or better. Even a light Impala SS or Caprice usually still weighs 3900 pounds without a driver too...it's a differential that will put up to a TON of abuse.

its true, an 8.5" will hold up for lots of shit, but i'm just saying for the price that you're gonna spend to get one and if it needs anything.....i can get a 9" housing, bolt in, with axles and bearings and studs already installed for $600, all it needs is a center section and dif....and you could buy the center & dif. used as long as the spline count matches....

The only "G" body cars to come with an 8.5" rear end are t-types, 442's and hurst olds'. all other 85 prior 10 bolts are 7.5's in 86 they changed to a 7 5/8 ring gear but there is no difference other than 1/16 more gear contact (none), and the 7 5/8"s came with 28 spline axles opposed to 26. im pretty sure all 8.5" g-bodys came with 3.42's from GM but the dealers could have installed others

'87 Cutlass turbo??

G-bodies with 8.5's...
Turbo Buicks 84-87, 3.42:1 gears.
Hurst-Olds/442, '84-'87, 3.73:1 gears. First year H/O's (83?) did not have the 8.5" rear.
28 spline axles.
Some wagons are rumored to have 8.5's. Still uncomfirmed.

7.5/7.625" trivia...
83 & 84 Monte SS, 3.42:1 gears. Posi not available on '83 SS.
85 - 88 Monte SS, 3.73:1 gears.
26 spline axles.

Have pity on Sickboy's rear end if he ever hooks up!:)

I take back my statement about 8.5's...yeah it's the same ring gear as is in a newer B-Body...but the B-Bodies got 30 spline axles. I'm sure that helps in the strength department.

I thought that Firebird looked familiar. Bob Jr. ended up painting it himself. Just needs a little more reassembly.http://pic5.picturetrail.com/VOL87/506567/2690639/41527526.jpg
Can we possibly go any farther off topic?
